Slow Children
Rebar
closes Oct. 21
The cliché-riddled Slow Children has doughnut-swilling, abusive cops and drug-swilling, bubble-headed heavy metal dudes. This Matthew Weiss play manages some hearty laughs early, then quickly grows tedious, wearing out its welcome like the drunken, obnoxious party guest who doesn't know when to make his exit.
By the time the inevitable cop-rock star switcheroo happens, the audience has overdosed on over-the-top acting and shouted, inane dialogue.

Tim Gouran is by far the brightest light in the cast; his character may be slow, but Gouran is a quick-witted actor, marvelously narrating Timo’s guitar solos.

Brandon Whitehead has some terrifically funny moments as a kidnapped deputy, but far too often strains to milk weak jokes for laughs.
     Guitars, guns, yawns . . .
